Curious Contrail: What was it?
Late Wednesday the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) received unverified reports of what appeared to be a contrail of unknown origin in the vicinity of the Turks and Caicos Islands in the Caribbean.
Initially, it was reported to be heading northwestward toward the United States. Commercial airline pilots later reported the contrail over Florida and later over
Indiana. Thereafter, no other sightings were reported.
In a Pentagon-released statement Thursday, it was noted that NORAD scrambled fighter aircraft from several bases in an attempt to intercept and identify
the source of the contrail. No visual or confirmed radar contact was made with the source of the contrail. NORAD continues to investigate these
reports.
NORAD is coordinating with the FAA to determine any further information on the nature of these reports, the Pentagon statement said.

The Manhattan Mercury @themercury.comMembers of Congress performed a huge disservice last week when they failed to agree to extend jobless benefits to hundreds of thousands of their fellow citizens.
Lawmakers found time as they should have to approve the Homeland Security bill. And they found time for other less compelling matters. But because members of both houses were unable to find either the motivation or the middle ground, the benefits for almost 1 million of their unemployed constituents will expire between Christmas and New Years Day.

Should we eat like cavemen?SOME ADVOCATES argue that our genetic makeup hasnt changed through the centuries, so neither should our diet. But there are many populations around the world that have eaten a diet quite different from that of cavemen for generations, without developing the rates of obesity, heart disease and cancer seen in America. They show that the the caveman diet isnt necessary to solve obesity or other health problems.
9-11 Hijackers: A Saudi Money Trail?
The leaders of a joint House-Senate Intelligence Committees investigation have vigorously pushed for the release of a classified report that lays out the evidence of the Saudi money flow. But Bush administration officials, led by Attorney General John Ashcroft and FBI Director Robert Mueller, have adamantly refused to declassify the evidence upon which the report is based. Senate Intelligence Committee chairman Sen. Bob Graham declined to discuss the evidence gathered by the joint inquiry, but he said he was upset over the Bush administrations intransigence. This one stinks of people using classified information for political purposes, said Graham.

For ArtThe most heated and well known instances of controversy sprang up in connection with Andres Serrano's photograph Piss Christ (1987), and a travelling retrospective of the work of Robert Mapplethorpe which were shown in seven American cities during 1988-90. There were also a number of other instances: An outdoor mural of the black artist David Hammons, which depicted Jesse Jackson as a whiteskinned and blonde-haired politician, was attacked by black men with sledgehammers in Washington D.C. in 1989. In May 1988 a group of city aldermen marched into the School of Art Institute of Chicago and instructed the police to seize a painting by a student which showed the black mayor of Chicago Harold Washington clothed in women's lingerie, claiming that the painting was racist and a disgrace to the city
The. Titolo in the collection of The Leslie-Lohman Gay Art FoundationAlong the way I discovered references in Greek mythology that the first humans were hermaphrodites, but the gods became jealous of their power and divided them into two sexes to weaken them; there is also a reference in the Kabbala to the effect that toward the end of the world, all will become hermaphrodites. In the 1960's it became obvious we didn't have to await the end of the world: we could soon design ourselves into doubling our pleasure.
How dogs developed smart pet tricks Swedish scientists traced mitochondrial DNA, which is passed down from mothers to children, to conclude that modern dogs can be traced to at least five female wolves who lived in East Asia about 15,000 years ago. During four years of study, the researchers saw common factors in hair samples from more than 500 different breeds around the world. Why is there such wide variation in modern dog breeds? Peter Savolainen, a senior scientist at the Swedish Royal Institute of Technology, says the main reason is the enormous interest in breeding that swept across Europe after the Middle Ages.

Early primates went out on a limbCarpolestes evolved as a direct result of the extinction of the dinosaurs 10 million years before, he said. Soon after the dinosaurs disappeared, there was an explosion in the numbers and kinds of mammals.
The little creature, weighing about 3.5 ounces and measuring 14 inches from its head to the tip of its long tail, would have resembled a modern Australian possum a marsupial and not related to primates, Bloch said.
Unlike living primates, it had eyes that looked sideways, to help avoid predators, and would have climbed rather than leaped from branch to branch, Bloch said.

U.S. politics: Is the fix in?The United States wouldnt be so thirsty for domestic oil, advocates of renewable and alternative energy sources contend, if it werent so dependent on oil in the first place.
We can talk very simply in terms of Gosh, you know, our supplies may one day be threatened; therefore, we should just drill more, said Michael Marvin, president of the Business Council on Sustainable Energy, a coalition of renewable energy companies and trade associations. Well, thats one of the options, and the other option is we could use less, and another is we could use something else.

Edward Witten, Institute for Advanced Study (Princeton), Duality, Spacetime and Quantum MechanicsIn the last few years, physicists have learned that the different string theories discovered and studied in different ways are limiting cases of a single, more powerful theory, known as M theory. "M" stands for magic, mystery, or matrix, according to taste. Some of these developments will be explained in this lecture.

A $4 billion-a-month war
So when you ask, Can we afford a war with Iraq, there are two basic answers. And each has significant long-term consequences.
Its not beyond our means as an economy, but it is beyond our budget, says Spratt. Its well beyond our budget. It cant be accommodated in the present budget without borrowing 100 percent of it. And that should be an alarm to all of us.

Alan Boyle: Cosmic LogDavid A. Hughes, Dunedin, Fla.: I knew the inscription was a fake. What disturbs me is our cultures continued efforts to find hope, faith, and love in the past and in objects such as the Shroud of Turin and the limestone ossuary, and even the Bible. As a society we need to find a new belief system that works in these hard times. We need to look inside ourselves for new ways to love humanity. The past is gone. The past is subject to interpretation. We must put our efforts in the present to build a future if we are to survive and grow. We need to be creative in our efforts to deal with and prevent all war, to repair our damaged ecosystem, to deal with poverty, crime, health needs and our future.

Alan Boyle: Cosmic Log I KNEW IT WAS A FAKE! Nov. 6, 2002 / 9 p.m. ET
Questions about the Jesus inscription: Does a box from biblical times bear the earliest-known reference to the historical Jesus? The question has been debated ever since the limestone ossuary a receptacle for skeletal remains came to light under mysterious circumstances last month.
The ossuary, which has just been shipped to Toronto for exhibition (and was damaged in transit), bears an Aramaic inscription referring to James, son of Joseph, brother of Jesus. This intrigued some scholars, who said the phrasing most likely referred to the biblical Jesus but in the past week, several experts on biblical history and script analysis have raised sharp doubts.
Robert Eisenman, a professor at California State University at Long Beach who has written a book about James, said last week in a Los Angeles Times article (registration required) that the story told by the inscription seemed too perfect and that its phrasing just didnt ring true.
Biblical scholar John Lupia told The Globe and Mail that he immediately knew the inscription was a fake because the area around the inscription didnt bear the same patterns of wear that he saw on the rest of the ossuarys surface.
Rochelle I. Altman, an expert on scripts who is co-coordinator of the IOUDAIOS-L mailing list, concluded that the latter half of the inscription the part about brother of Jesus was a poorly executed fake. Her reports on the subject, appearing on Israel Insider, have become the talk of the discussion sites.
Well, crap, one observer wrote on Metafilter. I guess us Christians are back to living by faith.
Thanks to Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, my MSNBC colleague and the proprietor of Pop Culture Junk Mail, for passing this along. What do you think of the latest archaeological controversy?

Great quotes to inspire, empower and motivate you to live the life of your dreams and become the person you've always wanted to be!
Caprice
Never lose sight of the fact that all human felicity lies in man's imagination, and that he cannot think to attain it unless he heeds all his caprices. The most fortunate of persons is he who has the most means to satisfy his vagaries.
Evil
Evil is a moral entity and not a created one, an eternal and not a perishable entity: it existed before the world; it constituted the monstrous, the execrable being who was also to fashion such a hideous world. It will hence exist after the creatures which people this world.
Happiness
Happiness lies neither in vice nor in virtue; but in the manner we appreciate the one and the other, and the choice we make pursuant to our individual organization.
Imagination
How delightful are the pleasures of the imagination! In those delectable moments, the whole world is ours; not a single creature resists us, we devastate the world, we repopulate it with new objects which, in turn, we immolate. The means to every crime is ours, and we employ them all, we multiply the horror a hundredfold.
Persecution
Miserable creatures, thrown for a moment on the surface of this little pile of mud, is it decreed that one half of the flock should be the persecutor of the other? Is it for you, mankind, to pronounce on what is good and what is evil?
Principles
Every principle is a judgment, every judgment the outcome of experience, and experience is only acquired by the exercise of the senses; whence it follows that religious principles bear upon nothing whatever and are not in the slightest innate. Ignorance and fear, you will repeat to them, ignorance and fear -- those are the twin bases of every religion.
Virtue
Ah, Eugnie, have done with virtues! Among the sacrifices that can be made to those counterfeit divinities, is there one worth an instant of the pleasures one tastes in outraging them?

"I am about to put foward some major ideas; they will be heard and pondered. If not all of them please, surely a few will; in some sort, then, I shall have contributed to the progress of our age, and shall be content."
Philosophy in the Bedroom
"Imperious, choleric, irascible, extreme in everything, with a dissolute imagination the like of which has never been seen, atheistic to the point of fanaticism, there you have me in a nutshell, and kill me again or take me as I am, for I shall not change."
From the Marquis de Sade's Last Will and Testament
"What does one want when one is engaged in the sexual act? That everything around you give you its utter attention, think only of you, care only for you...every man wants to be a tyrant when he fornicates."
"Certain souls seem hard because they are capable of strong feelings, and they sometimes go to rather extreme lengths; their apparent unconcern and cruelty are but ways, known only to themselves, of feeling more strongly than others."
Philosophy in the Bedroom
If the objects who serve us feel ecstacy, they are much more often concerned with themselves than with us, and our own enjoyment is consequently impaired. The idea of seeing another person experience the same pleasure reduces one to a kind of equality which spoils the unutterable charms that come from despotism."
"Any enjoyment is weakened when shared."
"No kind of sensation is keener and more active than that of pain; its impressions are unmistakable."
"Consider the problem from the point of view of evil, evil being almost always pleasure's true and major charm; considered thus, the crime must appear greater when perpetrated upon a being of your identical sort than when inflicted upon one which is not, and this once established, the delight automatically doubles."
The 120 Days of Sodom
"If it is the dirty element that gives pleasure to the act of lust, then the dirtier it is, the more pleasurable it is bound to be."
"The degradation which characterizes the state into which you plunge him by punishing him pleases, amuses, and delights him. Deep down he enjoys having gone so far as to deserve being treated in such a way."
"Crime is the soul of lust. What would pleasure be if it were not accompanied by crime? It is not the object of debauchery that excites us, rather the idea of evil."
"There is a kind of pleasure which comes from sacrilege or the profanation of the objects offered us for worship."
"One must do violence to the object of one's desire; when it surrenders, the pleasure is greater."
"The pleasure of the senses is always regulated in accordance with the imagination. Man can aspire to felicity only by serving all the whims of his imagination."
"All universal moral principles are idle fantasies."
"Sexual pleasure is, I agree, a passion to which all others are subordinate but in which they all unite."
"It has, moreover, been proven that horror, nastiness, and the frightful are what give pleasure when one fornicates. Beauty is a simple thing; ugliness is the exceptional thing. And firey imaginations, no doubt, always prefer the extraordinary thing to the simple thing."
The 120 Days of Sodom
"The idea of God is the sole wrong for which I cannot forgive mankind."
"I have supported my deviations with reasons; I did not stop at mere doubt; I have vanquished, I have uprooted, I have destroyed everything in my heart that might have interfered with my pleasure."
Aline et Valcour
"We are no guiltier in following the primative impulses that govern us than is the Nile for her floods or the sea for her waves."
"Let us dare do violence to this unintelligible Nature, the better to master the art of enjoying her."
Aline et Valcour
"Has not Nature proved, in giving us the strength necessary to submit them to our desires, that we have the right to do so?"
"It is not the opinions or the vices of private individuals that are harmful to the State, but rather the behavior of public figures."
"All creatures are born isolated and have no need of one another."
"Now I beg of you to tell me whether I must love a human being simply because he exists or resembles me and whether for those reasons alone I must suddenly prefer him to myself?"
"What lack of movement! What ice! Nothing stirs me, nothing excites me...I ask you, is this pleasure? What a difference on the other side! What tickling of my senses! What excitement in my organs!"
"Happiness lies only in that which excites, and the only thing that excites is crime."
"True felicity lies only in the senses, and virtue gratifies none of them."

PART THE FORTH
THE 150 MURDEROUS PASSIONS, OR THOSE BELONGING TO THE FORTH CLASS, COMPOSING THE TWENTY-EIGHT DAYS OF FEBRUARY SPENT IN HEARING THE NARRATIONS OF MADAME DESGRANGES; INTERSPERSED AMONGST WHICH ARE THE SCANDALOUS DOINGS AT THE CHATEAU DURING THAT MONTH; ALL BEING SET DOWN IN THE FORM OF A JOURNAL.
(DRAFT)
THE 1ST OF FEBRUARY. 1. He used to enjoy amusing himself with a beggarwoman who had not had a bit to eat in three days, as his second passion is to leave a woman to die of hunger in a dungeon; he keeps a close watch upon her and frigs himself while examining her, but does not discharge until the day she perishes.
2. He maintains her in a prison cell, toying with her for a long season, gradually diminishing her daily portion of food; beforehand, he has her shit, and eats her turd upon a platter.
3. He formerly liked to suck the mouth and swallow its saliva; in recent days he has developed the passion of immuring a woman in a dungeon with food to last no more than a fortnight; on the thirtieth day, he enters her prison and frigs himself upon the corpse.
4. First, he would have her piss, then he would slowly destroy her by preventing her from drinking although feeding her all she wanted to eat.
5. He would flog, then later kill the woman by depriving her of sleep.
THE 2ND. 6. His first passion was to have her shit into his mouth, and he would eat it as it emerged; nowadays he feeds her a diet of worthless bread and cheap wine. A month on this fare and she starves to death.
7. He was once a great cunt-fucker; now he gives the woman a venereal distemper by injection, but of such virulence she croaks in very short order.
8. As a youth, he was fond of receiving vomit in his mouth, now, by means of a certain decoction, he gives her a deathly fever which results in her speedy demise.
9. He was once wont to gather shit from assholes, presently injects an enema containing toxic ingredients dissolved in boiling water or aqua fortis.
10. Once a famous fustigator, today he binds a woman to a pivot upon which she uninterruptedly revolves until dead.
THE 3RD. 11. He used to like to slap a whore's face; as a mature man, he twists her head around until it faces backward. When so adjusted, one may simultaneously look at her face and at her buttocks.
12. Addicted to beastiality as a youngster, he now likes to have a girl depucelated by a stallion while he looks on. She ordinarily dies.
13. Once an ass-fucker, he now buries the girl up to her waist and maintains her thus till the lower half of her body rots.
14. Previously, he was wont to frig her clitoris, and he still does so, but more vigorously, employing one of his servants to keep at his work until the girl expires.
15. Gradually perfecting his passion over the years, a fustigator now flogs every part of a woman's body until she perishes.
THE 4TH. 16. His earlier passion was to squeeze the whore's neck, in later years he would tie the girl by the neck. Before her sits a somptuous meal, but to reach it she must strangle; otherwise she dies of hunger.
17. The same man who slew Duclos' sister and whose taste is to subject the flesh to a prolonged mauling, abuses the breasts and buttocks with such furious violence that his treatment of the whore proves fatal to her.
18. The man Martaine mentioned on the 20th of January, he who formerly adored bleeding women, now kills them by dint of repeated bloodlettings.
19. He whose passion in times past was to make a naked woman run until she dropped from exhaustion, in this age of unbridled libertinage shuts her up in a steaming bathhouse where she dies of asphyxiation.
20. He whom Duclos cited earlier, the gentleman who liked to be wrapped in swaddling clothes and fed whoreshit in a spoon rather than pap, swathes a girl so tightly in baby's blankets that he kills her.
THE 5TH. 21. His first passion is for beastiality, his second is to sew the girl into untanned donkey's skin, her head potruding; he feeds and cares for her until the animal skin shrinks and crushes her to death.
22. He of whom Martaine spoke on the 15th of January and who liked to hang a girl for amusement, currently amuses himself by hanging her by her feet until the blood rushing to her head kills her.
23. Duclos' libertine of the 27th of November who liked to besot his whore, today inserts a funnel into her mouth and floods her with liquids till she dies therefrom.
24. Once he was wont to mistreat nipples, but has progressed since then and now buckles a sort of small iron pot over each breast and lowers her over a stove; the iron heats, and she is allowed to perish thus in frighful pain.
25. His whole delight used to consist in watching a woman swim, but now he casts her into a pond and fishes her out half-drowned, then hangs her by the feet to encourage the water to drain out of her. Once she has returned to her senses, into the pond she goes again, and so on and so forth, till she gives up the ghost.
THE 6TH. 26. As a young man he used to kick a woman in the ass, tumbling her into a brazier, whence she would emerge before suffering excessively. He has lately refined this stunt, now obliges a girl to stand upright between two blazing fires: one cooks her in front, the other behind; and there she remains until the fat on her body melts.
27. In former times he would impede respiration by constricting the neck with his hands or by blocking the nose and mouth, but these days he deposits the whore between four mattresses and she suffocates.

My manner of thinking, so you say, cannot be approved. Do you suppose I care? A poor fool indeed is he who adopts a manner of thinking for others!
My manner of thinking stems straight from my considered reflections; it holds with my existence, with the way I am made. It is not in my power to alter it; and were it, I'd not do so.
This manner of thinking you find fault with is my sole consolation in life; it alleviates all my sufferings in prison, it composes all my pleasures in the world outside, it is dearer to me than life itself. Not my manner of thinking but the manner of thinking of others has been the source of my unhappiness.
The reasoning man who scorns the prejudices of simpletons necessarily becomes the enemy of simpletons; he must expect as much, and laugh at the inevitable.
A traveler journeys along a fine road. It has been strewn with traps. He falls into one. Do you say it is the traveler's fault, or that of the scoundrel who lays the traps?
If then, as you tell me, they are willing to restore my liberty if I am willing to pay for it by the sacrifice of my principles or my tastes, we may bid one another eternal adieu, for rather than part with those, I would sacrifice a thousand lives and a thousand liberties, if I had them.
These principles and these tastes, I am their fanatic adherent; and fanaticism in me is the product of the persecutions I have endured from my tyrants. The longer they continue their vexations, the deeper they root my principles in my heart, and I openly declare that no one need ever talk to me of liberty if it is offered to me only in return for their destruction.

what is this that i continue to cry
from physical pain?
only if i were god
what lessons are there still for me to learn?
will i find that love, that beauty, will i find that thing called happy
will my body heal and allow me to draw
will my aches diminish , will they go away
will my body heal and allow me to take clay into my hands once more
after twenty years
to take clay into my hands once more
and from my hands my mind and soul express
such wonders that here for now only sleep
upon my minds eye and pillow
will my neck, my knees, my back, my soul
find that healing rain, find that miracle
can i start all over again and redeem myself of all harm and pain
can i start all over again and be eighteen again, can i start all over again
and find myself standing upon the roof looking up at the full moon as if to fly
as if to certainly fly
can i start all over again
from physical pain?
only if i were god

Maxfield Parrish Biographyhis art, copy for ceramic sculpture plus klimt, with "robust" women, gay themes
my father showed up today at jame's apartment
he had not called or written saying he was coming
but that is okay
i hugged him a lot and said bless your heart a lot
he talked a lot, he failed to ask me how i was, but thats okay
he is in his own world, and thats okay
i will not judge him or critize him like the rest of my family does
they tell me he has a personality disorder
both parent were alcoholics, but that was out of his control
he is who and what he is, and he has a kind and caring spirit
he harms no one
he gave me a small stuffed pooh bear
a coke bottle hoping i would win the award on the bottle cap
and an old book of shakespear with a picture of me as a baby
and mom taped on the inside with a note from dad
alan and luz marie, his wife, drove all the way over here
from daytona beach last night and stayed in a hotel in lakeland
he then drove around an hour trying to find 3044 Park Lane #A
he knocked on the door at 1pm sunday afternoon
and he came in and talked for about 20 minutes
i then met his wife as she was in the car
he wanted to take me to lunch but i declined
as i walked away i heard him say
"misson accomplished"
i hugged him a lot, i hope he is happy
i cried some talking to james about it
i dont understand why i would cry, or feel this strangeness
i feel now
i guess i just wish my life had been different
i guess i love my dad, but i still feel sad
as my tears run down my face

good news about the kiln and the money - make sure you ask your lawyer for an itemized list of expenses. they charge extra for every stamp, every fax, every letter they write. it all comes out of your part of the settlement. so beware.
anything that gets you back in to art i am in favor of. i looked at the web sites and i have a suggestion. make the women you do chunky, thick or fat. there is quite a market now for the plumpcious goddess. make some gay themed art too. there is certainly a market for that as well.
i'm sorry about the mother thing. she will probably never change so you must love her anyway. i try to love my kids unconditionally but it's very difficult since i am a human being as well as a mother. your mom comes from a different time, and you have never been the traditional child. soon she will be taken from you and the time cannot be retrieved. maybe you should over look her faults and plan a visit. you can get through a 2 or 3 hours visit. go and be proud of what you are. answer all questions positively and with humor. they are, after all, the only family you have.
more later,
love always,
