The Origin of Religions, From a Distinctly Darwinian ViewThat has been the dark side of religion. But it is not an inevitable side of it. I don't want to come across as nave, but there's no theoretical reason why the moral circle can't be expanded to ultimately include everybody. Nor is there any reason why we can't take a surgical approach to religion, and keep what is positive about it while eliminating the intolerance.
Q. What about you? Are you religious? Do you believe in God?
A. I consider myself a communitarian, and there are many things I admire about religion, but no, I don't believe in God. I tell people I'm an atheist, but a nice atheist.

Californias water allotment reducedSAN DIEGO, Dec. 27 The Interior Department said Friday that it will cut Californias share of water next year from the Colorado River to ensure allocations for six other Western states. The amount would be enough to supply roughly 1.4 million people a year, and represents 13 percent of the water California has been taking from the river, officials said

The Hand of God: Thoughts and Images Reflecting the Spirit of the UniverseWhat frustrates you most about the secularist scientists or the religious ideologues that refuse to bridge the divide?
The same thing that frustrates me about many things: That the ability of many people to resolve conflicts is severely limited by their ideology. I believe that a rigid belief system whether it is religious, scientific or social is a severe impediment to creative problem solving.

U.S. Gets Tough In N. Korea Standoff: From The Tampa Tribune`I don't think this administration cares if the North Koreans build weapons,'' said Joel S. Wit, a former State Department official who was coordinator of the 1994 Agreed Framework deal. ``It serves a very cynical purpose on their part, which is to push all other countries into our lap. According to our cynical game plan, then [the North Korean regime] will collapse.
U.S. Gets Tough In N. Korea Standoff: From The Tampa TribuneWASHINGTON - In years of confrontations with North Korea, it was almost always the Americans who blinked.
U.S. leaders believed that a regime that would starve its people, assassinate foreign leaders and risk war through military provocations could not be rational and had to be placated with concessions.
Today, the Bush administration faces a deepening crisis with a new attitude: Pyongyang's leaders are sane and, under pressure, will realize that must give up their nuclear program and illicit arms trade if they want their government to survive.

i called my lawyer and once the judge signs my check
i am on my own, that will be in about a month
and i also called up my adjuster and told her
i had a prescription for six more therapy meetings
and thanked her for all her help, and i thanked lawyer
so when miss bitch heather calls my adjuster,
she will tell miss bitch heather they have to
see me until the judge signs my check
so i will need to tell this all to dr schwartz
when i see him on jan ninth, and tell him i
want him to be my doctor and that i will continue to
pay him to help me get better, ie, my knees, back, and neck
so it looks like i will have no medications for about a month
so i will have to grin and bear it until i get those funds
so its funny and good heather coped an attitude today
that prompted me to call my adjuster and my lawyer
so i know where i stand, i mean, this is so fucin cool
i might even get my money sooner
but i for sure wont go back to healthsouth for therapy
i will have to treat it on my own

standing in a wheat field, fire, ashes cover me
thunder, lightning, down from the sky thru my metallic
fingers into my metallic groin
huge huge animals surround me
ejecting mucus from their horns covering me from the waist down
dripping all over my ass and cock
thunder, wind, more flashes of light
now turning their mucus into hardening crystals
then suddenly a breath on the back of my neck
arms embracing me from behind
these crystals fracture and fall off
leaving me anked and exposed now
allowing him to reach around and to hold me
thrusting and saying
I WILL HELP YOU HEAL, I AM THE TREVOR
i am all whom you have loved and lost to death
you must do the art thing, you must be an artist, you must do it
with preserverance, then trevor steps inside and is still within me
i so wish i had said yest that fateful day of your death
the day you asked me to make love to you
perhaps i could have stopped the stabbing knife
to your chest, perhaps i could have stepped
in between you and that darkness and taken
the blows for myself
all full moons are now trevors moon
as it was the full moon of august, 1983
i felt you last night here my dear trevor
i wait for my day to join you and all my lovers
and passed loved ones and lovers
but i have many many years here still to do

Foster Care Woes: The Costs of IncompetenceDAYTONA BEACH -- Before taking a shower at a local emergency shelter for troubled teens, Theresa Miller's 16-year-old grandson was given a packet of toiletries by staff members.
The packets include razor blades. The boy shouldn't have had it; he had attempted suicide in August when he lived with Miller, who had raised him since he was a toddler. The shelter's policy, according to an official there, is to keep razors out of the hands of suicide-prone kids.

Elusive Neutrinos Pinned Down
In recent years scientists have been nailing shut the case that shifty little particles called neutrinos have mass. Friday, the nails seemed have been driven home.
Neutrinos are products of the Sun and other stars. They are detected in underground setups on Earth where other particles cannot penetrate. Neutrinos were once thought to be massless. Problem was, theorists said the Sun should make lots of them, and yet scientists could not detect the proper quantities. Researchers have therefore learned that neutrinos must have mass, a requirement for their being able to change into unknown forms, explaining those that go undetected.
The latest research was done in an old mine in Japan. Neutrinos from the country's nuclear reactors were sought, and fewer were found than expected, proving that some changed from in transit. Because nuclear plants emit precisely known quantities of neutrinos, the results provided firm confirmation of previous detections of reduced numbers of solar neutrinos, experts said.
"This is really a clear demonstration of neutrino disappearance," said Caltech particle physicist Robert McKeown. More about Neutrinos

Astrobiology RoadmapOrigins and evolution of functional biomolecules. Life can be understood as a chemical system that links a common property of organic moleculesthe ability to undergo spontaneous chemical transformationwith the uncommon property of synthesizing a copy of that system. This process, unique to life, allows changes in a living molecular system to be copied, thereby permitting Darwinian-like selection and evolution to occur
Origins: What is the Origins Program?Over the course of the next two decades, the Origins Program will develop the sophisticated telescopes and technologies that will bring us the information we seek. While the questions are challenging, our generation is privileged to have the technological ability to reveal the possibilities for the first time. Just as the Greeks were known for democracy, the Egyptians for pyramids, and the Romans for roads, our civilization may well be remembered for discovering life beyond our own planet, forever changing our perception of the Universe and our place within it.
Origins: Missions: Space-based Missions
The Origins missions form a family, in which each generation passes on a rich technological heritage to those that come after. Much like in human families, each mission has something unique to contribute, yet is closely tied to the others to form a supportive web. Origins currently has four chronological generations that move technology and knowledge forward:

Search for Another Earth Quietly UnderwayThe bottom line is that we just don't know what the probabilities are for finding a planet about the size of Earth in an essentially circular orbit at a distance from the star that such conditions would be habitable," Aizenman says. "Nevertheless, the hunt is a great adventure."
Life-Building Carbon Rings Found in Space"The molecules causing the UIBs must form in the relatively short period from protoplanetary nebula to planetary nebula," Cernicharo said. "It seems that carbon-rich protoplanetary nebulae are the best organic chemistry factories in space."
Life-Building Carbon Rings Found in SpaceThere's no shortage of hydrogen in space. And there's always a sprinkling of all the other star stuff. But now, a team of Spanish astronomers has made the first detection of interstellar rings of carbon, the type of molecules upon which Earth's life is based.

Benzene is made of six atoms of carbon chained together to form a ring, plus six atoms of hydrogen, one per carbon. This structure was discovered in 1865 by the German chemist August Kekule -- who would later say a dream inspired him.

Nitrates, Lightning Key to Life at Early EarthThis advance in plant evolution would have allowed for plants to colonize more environments on Earth, he said, and this proliferation eventually raised oxygen levels in the air and made an environment suitable for animals later.
"Once life invented the ability to fix (produce) nitrogen, life's new invention made it stronger," he said. "When life responds to changes, that life is stronger than before

Jupiter's Deadly Radiation Could Power Life On EuropaIn the search for microbial life on Jupiter's icy moon Europa, a new idea has emerged, suggesting that heavy doses of lethal radiation surrounding the massive planet might spur chemical reactions on its tiny satellite, providing fuel for life in the suspected liquid ocean below.
Ocean Lurks Deep in Ganymede, Galileo FindsSAN FRANCISCO NASAs Galileo spacecraft has detected an ocean deep below the frozen crust of Ganymede, making it the third of Jupiters moons thought to harbor liquid water beneath its surface.

The images also confirm the presence of a magnetic field around Ganymede, first detected by the Galileo spacecraft in 1996. there is life on ganymede and europa
Scientists Claim Evidence of Life in Outer SpaceLONDON (Reuters) - A team of international researchers said on Tuesday they have found what could be the first proof of life beyond our planet -- clumps of extraterrestrial bacteria in the Earth's upper atmosphere.
Hints of ET: Rock-Eating Critter Under the SeaFrom small things come great hope. Glass-eating microbes discovered 300 meters below the Earth's ocean floors have given scientists further evidence that life on Mars and Europa is a possibility.
The newly found microbes are literally at the rock bottom of the food chain. And they survive on a bare minimum: water, heat, and nutrients they digest from volcanic glass in the ocean floor. These lithoautotrophs, as they are called, are so bare bones they could easily exist on other less hospitable worlds.

Bizarre Creature in Idaho Raises Prospects for Life on MarsThe methanogen discovery is one in a long string of findings over the past two decades showing how resilient and creative life can be. Researchers have found simple organisms in relatively dry valleys of Antarctica, in pockets of water under permanent packs of ice, deep inside Earth and huddled around hydrothermal vents at pitch-black ocean bottoms
Good News for Life: Early Earth May Have Been Cool"This early age restricts theories for the formation of the Moon," Valley said. "Perhaps the Moon formed earlier than we thought, or by a different process."
Another intriguing question is whether or not life may have arisen at that early time. The earliest known evidence for life and for a hydrosphere is estimated at 3.85 billion years ago, and the oldest microfossils are 3.5 billion years old.
"This appears to be evidence of the earliest existence of liquid water on our planet," said Margaret Leinen, assistant director of geosciences at the National Science Foundation, which helped fund the study. "If water occurred this early in the evolution of earth, it is possible that primitive life, too, occurred at this time."
Life may have evolved and been extinguished several times in catastrophic, meteorite-triggered extinction events in those early years, Valley said

Alien Intelligence Depends on Time Needed to Grow BrainsAnother limiting factor for evolution on Earth was a lack of oxygen. The early Earth had very little free oxygen until cyanobacteria and other photosynthetic life forms began producing it about 2 billion years ago. Oxygen may be the key to tissue multi-cellularity, and thus the formation of large, multi-celled organisms capable of developing a brain. The build-up of oxygen also led to the development of an ozone layer, shielding life on Earth from the Sun's harmful UV rays.
But this need not be the case on other worlds. Perhaps some planets begin with substantial amounts of atmospheric oxygen. Slower tectonic activity would make more oxygen available, as would a less iron-rich geography. A planet with early access to oxygen might see life, and intelligence, evolve much faster than on Earth

New Arctic studies point to warmingSAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 9 Although surrounded by this tourist citys famed sights, earth scientists meeting here this week are instead eyeing issues from around the globe, and in particular new studies indicating a chilling pattern: The northernmost reaches of the Earth are warming reducing the sea ice across the Arctic Ocean, melting the ice sheet in Greenland and spreading shrubs into the Alaskan tundra.

dear muse:
i was up all night researching art, i am going to make ceramic , porcelain boxes that will look like
tombs and santa fe architecture with doors and then figures climbing up and around the boxes, i got
first place in the stetson homecoming art festival in 1976 for one of my porcelain boxes, that one
had a jesus figure in the top of the box with no head, and a monkey thing crawling up the side,
i made a box in daytona beach in 1996 and i have it but have not fired it, it has a rose on one side,
three greek characters dancing on one side, then bones in relief on the third side from that frozen
prehistoric man they found six years ago frozen in green land, and then on the fourth side is
an abstract male figure who is "howling", as his mouth is open, on the top is a broken
peice of stonehenge, it has made it thru traveling from daytona to largo, then made it to and back
from fort lauderdale, i cant wait to fire it, as it is still "green", and then put lusters on it, i am
also going to use gold leaf on my stuff,
and i have ideas of a series of large women,(your idea, thanks), doing chores, like hanging cloths
on an outside clothes line, all attached to four sided boxes with sant fe architecture on the boxes,
i came across this really cool lady artist, here are links to her museum in japan and
her tarot card garden , and i am going to use some of her ideas
for the large women series.

her name is Niki de Saint Phalle, check out the links and i am including a pic of the type of
women i am going to sculpt
she did a series of large females and she called them the nana series, i am
going to use them for inspiration but not copy her women, i might also do large men...
i really like the way she uses color., on the breasts, etc, i want to use
that but i dont want to copy it,
well, dear muse, love u much, and see you soon

hi, i want to thank you in advance for the ----, one week ago i dropped my denture, (this would sound funny if it didnt hurt so much)
on the floor and it
rolled under my bed and i got down on both knees on a pillow to get it, and in getting up off the floor, my
right knee freaked out, i had already missed three weeks of therapy due to hurting my neck three weeks ago, i have gone back, and i had an awful time and they were mad at me cause i had missed 21 days and needed a new prescription, which
i had by the way, and gave it to them, you would think they might show some compassion but not a bit,
but i am still going to therapy no matter what now, i was supposed to see my doc this week, but he
will just freak out on me and i cant afford to have him mmi me now, like the last doc, and he is not approved to treat my knees, so i am going to change the appt
to next week, that way i can get three or four more therapy sessions in before i see him, and
that should help out my right knee, i am icing a lot and that helps, it was so weird, the few weeks before
this the pain n my knees was getting better, i quess i need to be really careful, as soon as my check comes
i am hiring a rheumatogist to treat these knees, its a damn shame i had a shitty doctor , dr abrahamsen to treat my knees, he
is the one that told the other lawyers i was a chronic complainer and the boy who called wolf cause i was faxing him all the time saying i needed better pain management, man did that backfire on me,......, that were his words
during my hearing on oct 15, kids in distress was going to take me to court over my knees and that would have
taken three to six months so that is why i settled, what would be the point of seeing another orthopeadic surgeion
who works for them and then be really screwed and with no money, i hate this workers comp shit,
i am assuming its the scar tissue that is fucing with my knee, i had been massaging both knees for those
last three weeks and that hurt but it really helped, i had even stopped wearing my braces for three whole weeks, i was
so excited,
so this week i will stay off of it till thursday but will stretch it, go to therapy on wednesday, and friday
and try to stretch it and rub it so it will get better, i am so afraid of having my current doctor mmi me, like the
orthopeadic surgeon did, i will see him in two weeks and then i will tell him i had a set back with the knee,
by then he can refer to four more appointments under my belt with the physical therapist and he
wont freak out on me, so thank you so much honey....i quess this is going to take a lot longer to heal
then i ever imagined. love u much

i am the metallic ape
my feelings once true and pure
resound now withing this metal casing i call a body
no one cares anymore
i am the metallic ape
i wish to walk and climb
but now due to an injury sustained while
restraining children at kids in distress in wilton manors
i can not walk, or climb
i suffer, i cry, i wish for death
i know i should not think like this
i know i should not write this down
i am the metallic ape
cold, resounding echoes
once a wonderful man stood here
once this man dreamt of such wonderful things
now crippled, now harmed
in a world where no one gives a shit
i am the metallic ape
i wish, i wish................................

this morning is a morning of unbearable pain in both knees
i seem to have suffered a set back from knelling on my knees the other day
and from physical therapy
i wish i did not have to settle my claim, but without that money
i will be in more trouble,
i was up at five a m icing both knees, and had to sit in a chair
while i made breakfast,
i can only hope this is not a big deal, my knees that is
for the past three weeks the pain was getting better
and i was able to massaqe the quadricep tendon in both knees
quess i wont be kneeling anymore, god
i have physical therapy again on wednesday, and i need to change
the doctor appt to the following week,
i will not let this depress me, i know i will get better
i know my knees, back, and neck will heal, it just takes time
and i have plenty of time,
i am indeed grateful he is letting me stay here, and
buying me food, but when he gets mad and yells
at me over little things, well those are the times
like today
i wish i had stayed in fort lauderdale
or committed suicide
i know i should not think this way, but
for some time i have been just this depressed
it took me years to get over my love for james griffin
its a shame i am living here, i wish i could
have found another alternative
but his is my fate
i pray for total healing and no pain
i pray for my funds to come soon
i pray for my own place, a good job, and
please god, let me do my art again

i dare say i want to leave love behind
it causes so much pain
it ruins so many dreams
i am not sure as to what love is or its purpose
it can get so fucked up, that thing we call love
as a child i sought to be like jesus christ
as a child i sought to love each and everyone
and as a child it seemed to work
but as a man, i live in times
where men live to hurt and destroy
i live in awful times
but i am an artist, i will make something of these times
it causes so much pain

there is a power in dreaming
there is power in the dreamer
a thought is so much more then we understand or imagine
a thought is a from of energy
energy living in my brain
that thought reaches out into the
universe
that thought exists to become a solid thing
a real thing, living in real time
something in time i can touch
something in time i can feel, make warm, make cold
hold
and even break
i am an evolution

thanks to my ex i am in a warm place

james is not my lover
doug can do his thing
i am not part of that social circle
and frankly i have no interest in it at all
i dont like being around men who drink
and i get more and more tired of men who abuse drugs
my god, six beans in one night, what is perri thinking
well , i learned my lesson, they each in turn
must learn theirs
it would be nice to have a lover slash soul mate
dreams, why do we dream, and .........

i am preparing for my body of work
it already grows within me
wanting to be
i wish to make things of such beauty
that i will hurt to part with each one
i have no interest in mass production
and i really have no interest in monetary gains
now who am i kidding, every artist wants
to find that gem in his soul
to spit out that gem
and with his fanciful vomit
become a millionare
it is my wish
to vomit and vomit and vomit
things of beauty fired with heat and fire
things of beauty of clay, turned into solid objects
wonders from my mind and soul
happy and sad, they all shall be born
i will have this ....many children
each one
i wait for my funds
i wait for my kiln
i wait for my car
i wait for my apartment
i want a place of beauty
looking over water
i want second floor
and want a balcony
these things i shall have
and bundles and bundles of calcified vomit
so this is my story

i was a child playing n the back yard of my grandparents house on seneca
i was buring leaves in a big fire
and asked god for the gift of wisdom, and the unknown
now i am older but still this child lives within me
he runs and plays, jumping over all the fires
and pushing his way over walls and under rivers
to find what he wants to have, wants to be
an artist
and a rich one

STScI- PRC02-29: Hubble Photographs 'Double Bubble' in Neighboring GalaxyA unique peanut-shaped cocoon of dust, called a reflection nebula, surrounds a cluster of young, hot stars in this view from NASA's Hubble Space Telescope. The "double bubble," called N30B, is inside a larger nebula. The larger nebula, called DEM L 106, is embedded in the Large Magellanic Cloud, a satellite galaxy of our Milky Way lying 160,000 light-years away. The wispy filaments of DEM L 106 fill much of the image. Hubble captures the glow of fluorescing hydrogen and sulfur, as well as the brilliant blue-white colors of the hot stars.

The dawn of New World writingWASHINGTON, Dec. 5 The roots of writing in the New World have been traced back to a time earlier than researchers thought as far back as 2,650 years, when the ancient Olmec civilization flourished on Mexicos Gulf Coast, according to a study in the journal Science, published by the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
Skull boosts theory about first AmericansTHE SKULL is believed to be the oldest ever discovered in the Americas and is among 150 mostly undated specimens being studied by Silvia Gonzalez, a leading world authority on prehistoric man and mammoths, after being gathered at Mexicos National Museum of Anthropology and other museums.
The skull has the long, narrow-headed cranial features common to the native peoples of Central and South America, as opposed to the short and broad-headed type characteristic of North American Indians. Gonzalez, with the help of a laboratory in Britain, has determined that it is 13,000 years old.

Vatican official says gay priests riskyMost of the victims have been adolescent boys. Experts on sex offenders say there is no credible evidence that homosexuals are more likely than heterosexuals to abuse children, but several church leaders have argued that gay clergy are to blame for the scandal.

Study links biking, male infertilityDec. 2 Frequent mountain-biking may reduce fertility in men, according to a small Austrian study that adds fodder to a debate over cycling and male sexual function. The research suggests frequent jolts and vibration caused by biking over rough terrain may cause abnormalities, including small scars within the scrotum and impaired sperm production.

Antiwar effort gains momentumReed, recalling the four wars she has seen this country involved in during her lifetime, said she is often motivated by a single memory decades old. She was visiting the nations capital, she said, when she saw a man without a face.
Yes, she said, without a face. He had nothing but a plastic mask with two holes for eyes and one for mouth. It still swims before my inner vision, provoking an agony of grief that no one had been able to stop the war that took away that mans face.

Decoration is the most important part of the process in my work. I make forms just to be able to embellish the surface. The majority of my work is made from objects that I collect. I then make a plaster mold so that I can recreate the imagery in clay. In my art, I can reorganize the world in a way that suits me, this gives me a feeling of power, however false and fleeting, that I have yet to find in any other activity.
I enjoy the Olde Lady techniques the best. Gold lustre, molds, decals, glaze pencils, stencils, anything I can use to decorate and go overboard. Most of the time I find my inspiration outside of the ceramic world from a variety of cultures and craft techniques. Patterns in textiles, carved folk art, 17th century still life painting, and engravings of plants and animals are a few of the things that I look at. Detail, excess, nature and decay are themes in my work, but my ultimate goal is to make beautiful objects that please the senses.
Technique
Each piece is made in earthenware, glazed with lowfire hand mixed glazes and slips and finished with gold lustre. Each piece is created individually by casting found objects, and layering them onto textured surfaces. The addition of glaze pencil drawings, intricate stencils, decals and carved stamps, add to the rich surface of each piece. Each piece is meant to be decorative, although tiles can be installed in the home, platters can be used for food, bottles and vases can be filled with liquids, and boxes can hold any number of personal belongings.

Sculpture by Beth Stichter - Artistic StatementThrough formalistic abstraction of organic, mechanical, and subconscious forms, my work searches for that elusive space between contradictions where we catch our breath and furrow our brows. The images I create come from an interior landscape. As Andr Breton stated, the firmness of the past [and our present reality] is an illusiona kaleidoscope, a pattern of images that shift with each disturbance of a sudden breeze, a laugh, a thought. I would like to court your subconscious, and suggest a way of looking that will allow you to see again what is there

Curious Contrail: What was it?
Late Wednesday the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) received unverified reports of what appeared to be a contrail of unknown origin in the vicinity of the Turks and Caicos Islands in the Caribbean.
Initially, it was reported to be heading northwestward toward the United States. Commercial airline pilots later reported the contrail over Florida and later over
Indiana. Thereafter, no other sightings were reported.
In a Pentagon-released statement Thursday, it was noted that NORAD scrambled fighter aircraft from several bases in an attempt to intercept and identify
the source of the contrail. No visual or confirmed radar contact was made with the source of the contrail. NORAD continues to investigate these
reports.
NORAD is coordinating with the FAA to determine any further information on the nature of these reports, the Pentagon statement said.

The Manhattan Mercury @themercury.comMembers of Congress performed a huge disservice last week when they failed to agree to extend jobless benefits to hundreds of thousands of their fellow citizens.
Lawmakers found time as they should have to approve the Homeland Security bill. And they found time for other less compelling matters. But because members of both houses were unable to find either the motivation or the middle ground, the benefits for almost 1 million of their unemployed constituents will expire between Christmas and New Years Day.

Should we eat like cavemen?SOME ADVOCATES argue that our genetic makeup hasnt changed through the centuries, so neither should our diet. But there are many populations around the world that have eaten a diet quite different from that of cavemen for generations, without developing the rates of obesity, heart disease and cancer seen in America. They show that the the caveman diet isnt necessary to solve obesity or other health problems.
9-11 Hijackers: A Saudi Money Trail?
The leaders of a joint House-Senate Intelligence Committees investigation have vigorously pushed for the release of a classified report that lays out the evidence of the Saudi money flow. But Bush administration officials, led by Attorney General John Ashcroft and FBI Director Robert Mueller, have adamantly refused to declassify the evidence upon which the report is based. Senate Intelligence Committee chairman Sen. Bob Graham declined to discuss the evidence gathered by the joint inquiry, but he said he was upset over the Bush administrations intransigence. This one stinks of people using classified information for political purposes, said Graham.

For ArtThe most heated and well known instances of controversy sprang up in connection with Andres Serrano's photograph Piss Christ (1987), and a travelling retrospective of the work of Robert Mapplethorpe which were shown in seven American cities during 1988-90. There were also a number of other instances: An outdoor mural of the black artist David Hammons, which depicted Jesse Jackson as a whiteskinned and blonde-haired politician, was attacked by black men with sledgehammers in Washington D.C. in 1989. In May 1988 a group of city aldermen marched into the School of Art Institute of Chicago and instructed the police to seize a painting by a student which showed the black mayor of Chicago Harold Washington clothed in women's lingerie, claiming that the painting was racist and a disgrace to the city
The. Titolo in the collection of The Leslie-Lohman Gay Art FoundationAlong the way I discovered references in Greek mythology that the first humans were hermaphrodites, but the gods became jealous of their power and divided them into two sexes to weaken them; there is also a reference in the Kabbala to the effect that toward the end of the world, all will become hermaphrodites. In the 1960's it became obvious we didn't have to await the end of the world: we could soon design ourselves into doubling our pleasure.
How dogs developed smart pet tricks Swedish scientists traced mitochondrial DNA, which is passed down from mothers to children, to conclude that modern dogs can be traced to at least five female wolves who lived in East Asia about 15,000 years ago. During four years of study, the researchers saw common factors in hair samples from more than 500 different breeds around the world. Why is there such wide variation in modern dog breeds? Peter Savolainen, a senior scientist at the Swedish Royal Institute of Technology, says the main reason is the enormous interest in breeding that swept across Europe after the Middle Ages.

Early primates went out on a limbCarpolestes evolved as a direct result of the extinction of the dinosaurs 10 million years before, he said. Soon after the dinosaurs disappeared, there was an explosion in the numbers and kinds of mammals.
The little creature, weighing about 3.5 ounces and measuring 14 inches from its head to the tip of its long tail, would have resembled a modern Australian possum a marsupial and not related to primates, Bloch said.
Unlike living primates, it had eyes that looked sideways, to help avoid predators, and would have climbed rather than leaped from branch to branch, Bloch said.

U.S. politics: Is the fix in?The United States wouldnt be so thirsty for domestic oil, advocates of renewable and alternative energy sources contend, if it werent so dependent on oil in the first place.
We can talk very simply in terms of Gosh, you know, our supplies may one day be threatened; therefore, we should just drill more, said Michael Marvin, president of the Business Council on Sustainable Energy, a coalition of renewable energy companies and trade associations. Well, thats one of the options, and the other option is we could use less, and another is we could use something else.

Edward Witten, Institute for Advanced Study (Princeton), Duality, Spacetime and Quantum MechanicsIn the last few years, physicists have learned that the different string theories discovered and studied in different ways are limiting cases of a single, more powerful theory, known as M theory. "M" stands for magic, mystery, or matrix, according to taste. Some of these developments will be explained in this lecture.

A $4 billion-a-month war
So when you ask, Can we afford a war with Iraq, there are two basic answers. And each has significant long-term consequences.
Its not beyond our means as an economy, but it is beyond our budget, says Spratt. Its well beyond our budget. It cant be accommodated in the present budget without borrowing 100 percent of it. And that should be an alarm to all of us.

Alan Boyle: Cosmic LogDavid A. Hughes, Dunedin, Fla.: I knew the inscription was a fake. What disturbs me is our cultures continued efforts to find hope, faith, and love in the past and in objects such as the Shroud of Turin and the limestone ossuary, and even the Bible. As a society we need to find a new belief system that works in these hard times. We need to look inside ourselves for new ways to love humanity. The past is gone. The past is subject to interpretation. We must put our efforts in the present to build a future if we are to survive and grow. We need to be creative in our efforts to deal with and prevent all war, to repair our damaged ecosystem, to deal with poverty, crime, health needs and our future.

Alan Boyle: Cosmic Log I KNEW IT WAS A FAKE! Nov. 6, 2002 / 9 p.m. ET
Questions about the Jesus inscription: Does a box from biblical times bear the earliest-known reference to the historical Jesus? The question has been debated ever since the limestone ossuary a receptacle for skeletal remains came to light under mysterious circumstances last month.
The ossuary, which has just been shipped to Toronto for exhibition (and was damaged in transit), bears an Aramaic inscription referring to James, son of Joseph, brother of Jesus. This intrigued some scholars, who said the phrasing most likely referred to the biblical Jesus but in the past week, several experts on biblical history and script analysis have raised sharp doubts.
Robert Eisenman, a professor at California State University at Long Beach who has written a book about James, said last week in a Los Angeles Times article (registration required) that the story told by the inscription seemed too perfect and that its phrasing just didnt ring true.
Biblical scholar John Lupia told The Globe and Mail that he immediately knew the inscription was a fake because the area around the inscription didnt bear the same patterns of wear that he saw on the rest of the ossuarys surface.
Rochelle I. Altman, an expert on scripts who is co-coordinator of the IOUDAIOS-L mailing list, concluded that the latter half of the inscription the part about brother of Jesus was a poorly executed fake. Her reports on the subject, appearing on Israel Insider, have become the talk of the discussion sites.
Well, crap, one observer wrote on Metafilter. I guess us Christians are back to living by faith.
Thanks to Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, my MSNBC colleague and the proprietor of Pop Culture Junk Mail, for passing this along. What do you think of the latest archaeological controversy?

Great quotes to inspire, empower and motivate you to live the life of your dreams and become the person you've always wanted to be!
Caprice
Never lose sight of the fact that all human felicity lies in man's imagination, and that he cannot think to attain it unless he heeds all his caprices. The most fortunate of persons is he who has the most means to satisfy his vagaries.
Evil
Evil is a moral entity and not a created one, an eternal and not a perishable entity: it existed before the world; it constituted the monstrous, the execrable being who was also to fashion such a hideous world. It will hence exist after the creatures which people this world.
Happiness
Happiness lies neither in vice nor in virtue; but in the manner we appreciate the one and the other, and the choice we make pursuant to our individual organization.
Imagination
How delightful are the pleasures of the imagination! In those delectable moments, the whole world is ours; not a single creature resists us, we devastate the world, we repopulate it with new objects which, in turn, we immolate. The means to every crime is ours, and we employ them all, we multiply the horror a hundredfold.
Persecution
Miserable creatures, thrown for a moment on the surface of this little pile of mud, is it decreed that one half of the flock should be the persecutor of the other? Is it for you, mankind, to pronounce on what is good and what is evil?
Principles
Every principle is a judgment, every judgment the outcome of experience, and experience is only acquired by the exercise of the senses; whence it follows that religious principles bear upon nothing whatever and are not in the slightest innate. Ignorance and fear, you will repeat to them, ignorance and fear -- those are the twin bases of every religion.
Virtue
Ah, Eugnie, have done with virtues! Among the sacrifices that can be made to those counterfeit divinities, is there one worth an instant of the pleasures one tastes in outraging them?
